Quilters Supporting the People of Ukraine

Quilters have a long history of showing love and support for the people and causes they care about. As I understand it, the people of Ukraine don’t need our quilts right now, but they do need humanitarian aid.

I was moved and inspired by a post from Aurifil Thread this week, showcasing free or low-cost patterns designed as fundraisers and providing links to donate to the Quilters Stand for Ukraine Fundraiser.

There are many other ways to charities to choose from; but whichever you select, make sure it’s a registered charity with a good reputation. A few suggestions: Catholic Relief Services, International Committee of the Red Cross, and Doctors without Borders

It can be so overwhelming to see all the suffering in the world and feel so powerless. But there are things we can do – for the people of Ukraine, and for others around the world and in our own countries, if we look around. Many heartfelt  thanks to all who are showing us practical ways to do this.

These are the pattern credits for the blocks shown in the collage, along with links to the patterns:

Sunflower for Ukraine Paper Pieced Pattern from Quiet Play (now a FREE download with a request to PLEASE donate to a charity or organization that is supporting Ukraine.)

Rise of Freedom flag block from  SashasQuilts ) ($5 block fundraiser)

Peace for Ukraine block designed by Berene Campbell of Happy Sew Lucky (FREE pattern)

FREE Star in Star pattern from Aurifil designer Pat Sloan (FREE pattern – donation suggested)

Happy Quilting!

Beth Ann

When health challenges made hand-sewing (and hand appliqué and hand-quilting) no longer physically viable for her, Beth Ann’s first instinct was dismay and discouragement. But Grandma Baldwin gave her a loving (but stern!) “No pity parties – just figure out a different way.” So Beth Ann turned to her trusty sewing machine and began devising ways to achieve the fine quality appliqué look she craved faster and easier than she ever thought possible. And a career was born! Now Beth Ann enjoys sharing her accessible “invisible” machine appliqué and creative machine quilting techniques with other quilters and fiber artists around the world.
