You Asked — I Listened! DIY Pressing Boards + Big Board for Quilting

After my “Make Machine Quilting Easier” video, many of you asked how I made the big ironing board that I use to support large quilts while quilting on my domestic machine. So, in this video, I show you how to make your own pressing boards — both the portable versions (handy for class, travel, or next to your machine while you sew) AND the full-length big board.

What you’ll learn:

  • How to build any size pressing board step by step
  • How to safely use wool mats without damaging your tables or cutting mats
  • How I use the big board to support quilts while sewing quilt bindings or machine quilting on a domestic machine AND when pressing long rows, borders, yardage, or backing fabric.

The Therma-Flec Heat Resistant Cloth is OPTIONAL. Cotton canvas or cotton quilting fabric are other alternatives – although boards with quilting-weight cottons may need to be recovered more often.

When health challenges made hand-sewing (and hand appliqué and hand-quilting) no longer physically viable for her, Beth Ann’s first instinct was dismay and discouragement. But Grandma Baldwin gave her a loving (but stern!) “No pity parties – just figure out a different way.” So Beth Ann turned to her trusty sewing machine and began devising ways to achieve the fine quality appliqué look she craved faster and easier than she ever thought possible. And a career was born! Now Beth Ann enjoys sharing her accessible “invisible” machine appliqué and creative machine quilting techniques with other quilters and fiber artists around the world.
