As a longtime quilter, one of my favorite things about attending a quilt show is exploring the wonderfully different ways quiltmakers express their ideas through fabric and thread.
While exploring the exhibition this year, I began noticing recurring themes and interesting connections among quilts that were otherwise quite different from one another. Those observations inspired Threads of Inspiration, a five-part series of curated video galleries celebrating the creativity and craftsmanship of quiltmakers from around the world.
I’ve gathered all five galleries here so you can enjoy the entire series or simply choose the themes that interest you most. Each video includes the original exhibition signage identifying the quilts and their makers, followed by time to enjoy the quilts themselves. Some galleries also include detailed close-ups for an even better look.
Gallery 1: People & Places
From portraits and personal stories to landscapes and memorable locations, quilts can offer fascinating interpretations of people and the places that matter to us.
In this first gallery, we’ll explore some of the different ways quiltmakers bring these subjects to life.
Gallery 2: Color & Restraint
Color can be exuberant, subtle, surprising, or beautifully restrained.
This gallery explores the impact of color choices, from quilts that celebrate an abundance of color to those that demonstrate how effective a limited palette can be.
Gallery 3: Animals
Animals have long inspired quiltmakers, and the quilts in this gallery offer a delightful variety of interpretations.
Enjoy exploring the different ways these artists capture the character, beauty, and presence of creatures through fabric and stitching.
Gallery 4: Flowers
Flowers provide an almost endless source of inspiration for quiltmakers!
In this gallery, we’ll enjoy a variety of floral interpretations, each reflecting the artist’s own creative approach.
Gallery 5: Unexpected Shapes & Forms
For our fifth and final gallery, we’re exploring some delightfully unexpected approaches to shape, color, and design.
These quilts invite us to look a little closer and enjoy the many different ways artists can use familiar materials to create something surprising.
Enjoy the Complete Series
Would you rather watch all five galleries in sequence? I’ve also brought the videos together into a YouTube Show:
Threads of Inspiration: Exploring Themes at the AQS Grand Rapids 2026 Quilt Show
Whether you watch one gallery or all five, I hope you’ll discover something that catches your eye, sparks a new idea, or simply gives you a moment to enjoy the remarkable artistry on display.
Many thanks to the American Quilter’s Society and to all the artists whose work made this exhibition possible.
Happy Quilting!
