Avoiding Wonky Quilt Blocks & Wavy Borders – The Secret to Flatter Quilt Tops

If your quilt blocks sometimes come out a little crooked…
If your borders won’t always lie flat…
Or if your quilt top looks “off,” even though your seam allowances were accurate and consistent…

You are definitely in good company.

These are some of the most common questions I hear from both newer and experienced quilters, and they were the inspiration for the very first episode of my new Ask Beth Ann video series.

In this post, we’re focusing on quilt top construction – before quilting and binding – so you can fix distortion problems at their source.

In the video, I demonstrate:

  • how grainline affects cutting and piecing decisions
  • pressing techniques that help blocks stay square
  • pressing seams open vs. to one side
  • how and why to staystitch quilt edges – A Victory Lap!
  • how to measure and pin borders step by step
  • plus 2 other factors that may cause wavy borders

Beth Ann

When health challenges made hand-sewing (and hand appliqué and hand-quilting) no longer physically viable for her, Beth Ann’s first instinct was dismay and discouragement. But Grandma Baldwin gave her a loving (but stern!) “No pity parties – just figure out a different way.” So Beth Ann turned to her trusty sewing machine and began devising ways to achieve the fine quality appliqué look she craved faster and easier than she ever thought possible. And a career was born! Now Beth Ann enjoys sharing her accessible “invisible” machine appliqué and creative machine quilting techniques with other quilters and fiber artists around the world.
