Scrappy, Happy Improvisational Christmas Trees – Part 2: From Blocks to Quilt Top 🎄

In Part 1 of the Happy Little (Christmas) Trees series, I shared how to create playful improvisational Christmas tree blocks using a low-pressure, mix-and-match technique. Now it’s time to explore the many ways to lay them out and turn those blocks into a finished quilt top!

In Part 2, I’ll guide you through helpful design tricks, block variations (including no-trunk versions!), and layout tips you can use not just for this quilt, but for almost any scrappy project.

You’ll also learn how to use grayscale photos to evaluate value contrast, how to keep track of your rows, and how to sew everything together with a consistent seam allowance  – including specific tips at each stage for pressing your seam allowances.

Whether you’re going modern, classic, or full-on scrappy, this video will help you confidently move from blocks to quilt top.

When health challenges made hand-sewing (and hand appliqué and hand-quilting) no longer physically viable for her, Beth Ann’s first instinct was dismay and discouragement. But Grandma Baldwin gave her a loving (but stern!) “No pity parties – just figure out a different way.” So Beth Ann turned to her trusty sewing machine and began devising ways to achieve the fine quality appliqué look she craved faster and easier than she ever thought possible. And a career was born! Now Beth Ann enjoys sharing her accessible “invisible” machine appliqué and creative machine quilting techniques with other quilters and fiber artists around the world.
